Sciencewerke and Garvan Institute collaborate to provide Whole Human Genome Sequencing

21 July 2015

We are pleased to announce our collaboration with Garvan Institute of Medical Research to provide Whole Human Genome Sequencing.

The Garvan Institute of Medical Research is one of Australia’s leading biomedical research institutes, pioneering study into the most widespread diseases affecting our community today, including cancer, neurodegenerative and mental diseases, disorders of the immune system, diabetes and obesity, osteoporosis and other skeletal disorders. The Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics (KCCG) was established by the Garvan Institute in 2012 to advance the use of genomic information in patient care. KCCG employs world-leading DNA analysis technology and expertise in genetics, pathology and bioinformatics to deliver and interpret genome sequences for research and clinical use.

In January 2014, the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics acquired and installed an Illumina’s HiSeq X Ten system. The HiSeq X Ten platform comprises 10 HiSeq X sequencing instruments. Each instrument is capable of generating up to 1.8 terabases of data every 3 days, which is sufficient to sequence at least 15 whole human genomes at 30x coverage. Combined the HiSeq X Ten platform has capacity to sequence 350 genomes per week or 18,000 genomes per year.

In September 2014, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, DNAnexus and AllSeq teamed up to release the first publicly available data from the HiSeq X Ten. In October the same year, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research announced a commercial partnership with Personalis to bring together high-quality, large-scale whole genome sequencing with best-in-class analysis and interpretation services for research and clinical applications.

As part of this collaborative network, Sciencewerke is now offering Whole Human Genome Sequencing services from the Garvan Institute of Medical Research as well as Advanced Whole Genome Sequencing Analysis and Interpretation services from Personalis.
